Can You Hold the Elevator?

I get home from work and I'm walking down the hall to the elevator. A women comes out of the laundry room and goes to the elevator. I didn't catch her face, but I recognized her as someone who lives on the same floor. I see her lean out briefly to see who's coming down the hall. I'm in my uniform, so I'm sure she recognizes me. I hear the elevator doors open and she steps on. Now, she knows I'm literally seconds away from the elevator, but she proceeds to go up by herself.

I don't know why, but that really annoyed me.

I guess it's because I'll hold the elevator if I hear someone hurring towards it. Doesn't matter who it is - most of the time I just hear them coming down so I hold the door open. It's only a few seconds out of my day and it's just a nice, polite thing to do. Even if I have to really go to the bathroom, I'll wait. I mean, if a few seconds makes the difference to making it to the bathroom, I should learn to listen to my body better.

Maybe in this world of "hurry, hurry, hurry" holding the elevator is just my way of making it that less hurried. But, hey, who am I to try to making things a little easier for my fellow human? Maybe I should adopt that "me" attitude. I did live through the 80s - I'm sure I picked up some selfish habits then.

Just writing about this makes me even more annoyed. But do not fear. I will still hold the elevator for people.

But if I see her, maybe my finger will slip. From what I've seen, revenge is often a great cure for what annoys you.

When I get on the elevator, I keep pushing the "close door" button as quickly as I can so I can get to my floor. Of course, I take the short elevator...

no, not short bus...short elevator :)

I would be really annoyed with that to. What's so bloody important that people can't wait 2 seconds? People are really annoying at times.

Maybe we should become hermits...?

Well, to be honest, all of the safety things women read say to never be in an elevator alone with a man, no matter how well you know him. Most rapes are committed by someone known to the victim, in/near the victim's home. So, I guess I would give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she's had a traumatic experience.
